Prescription Drug Addiction
Prescription drug addiction can happen to anyone, of any age and from all walks of life. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in 2008, 15.2 million Americans age 12 and older had taken a prescription pain reliever, tranquilizer, stimulant, or sedative for nonmedical purposes at least once in the year prior to being surveyed. Prescription drug abuse means taking a prescription medication that is not prescribed for you, or taking it for reasons or in dosages other than as prescribed. Abuse of prescription drugs can produce serious health effects, including prescription drug addiction.
Prescription Drug Addiction Happens When the Patient "Plays Doctor"
Anxiety, sleeping disorders, depression, chronic physical pain or emotional disturbance - these are all reasons why an individual may choose to abuse prescription drugs. Sometimes the choice is an intentional misuse of the drug and at other times it may be accidental. Some of the warning signs of prescription drug abuse are the following indications:
- Usage increase
- Personality change
- Social withdrawal
- Preoccupation and increased time spent obtaining prescriptions
- Change in daily habits and appearance
- Neglecting responsibility
- Increased sensitivity to normal sights, sounds and emotions
- Blackouts and forgetfulness
- Over defensiveness
Prescriptions to pain medication and other potentially habit-forming prescription drugs can be safely taken with strict adherence to the prescribing doctor's instructions and with careful monitoring. However, it is important to recognize that they can also be very dangerous and addictive.
