Ambien Addiction
Ambien addiction is a risk for anyone who takes this drug for extended periods of time. Many Ambien addictions begin when an individual forgets their recommended dosage and takes Ambien more frequently or in larger amounts than they should. The elderly are often at a greater risk for taking the wrong amount of a prescription drug due to the fact that they may be on a variety of prescribed medication.
Ambien is in a category of newer sleep medications, now more commonly prescribed to treat sleep disorders. These medications are nonbenzodiazepines that act at a subset of the benzodiazepine receptors and appear to have a lower risk for abuse and addiction - however, tolerance will develop over days, weeks or months of extended use.
Even when used as recommended, Ambien may produce emotional and/or physical dependence. At doses greater than 4 mg per day, Ambien has the potential to cause an Ambien addiction of severe emotional and physical dependence in some patients and these individuals may find it exceedingly difficult to stop using this medication.
Ambien Abuse
Some people abuse Ambien intentionally. Forms of Ambien abuse include:
- Using more than the prescribed amount (usually 4 mg per day)
- Using it for a longer time than is prescribed (2 weeks at the most)
- Mixing it with other substances such as alcohol
- Crushing and snorting the pills or cooking it for an intravenous injection
- Intentionally fighting the effects of the drug, putting off sleep in order to experience euphoria, or auditory/visual distortions and possibly hallucinations
